Brown rice is a healthier choice than refined white rice. Brown rice contains the side hull and bran, providing natural wholeness to the grain and is rich in fibre, proteins, thiamine, calcium, magnesium and potassium. For those trying to lose weight or those suffering from diabetes, brown rice can prove a healthful staple given its low glycemic index.
Cooking instructions: Soak rice in water for 30 minutes. Drain, and combine 1 cup rice with 3 cups water and salt to taste in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 50 to 55 minutes until all of the liquid is absorbed. Remove from the heat, and allow to sit undisturbed for 10 minutes.
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry, dark place.
